What Can You Expect on a Wellness Retreat? It's Not All Green Juices and Colonics.

It’s not all green juices and ahem colonics, in Australia there is a common misconception that healthy holidays are, well painful, burpees before breakfast and breakfast is liquified. However it really couldn’t be further from the truth. While there is a wide variety of offerings and I’ve personally experiences some extreme options (personal enema room, err thanks but no thanks) the variety of wellness offerings nowadays is as broad as Australia is multicultural.

In my role as Director of Health and Fitness Travel I have been privileged to experience some of the best (so we can make sure our clients don’t waste their precious annual leave). And I am on a mission to share what I have discovered and encourage travellers to dedicate some time out for themselves.

Nowadays the vast majority of wellness retreats are luxurious, the food is incredible and will convert even the most resistant guest (aka my husband, who once infamously announced that ”it’s not a meal without meat'“ and then happily spent a week embracing a vegan paleo inspired rainbow of cuisine at Aro Ha in New Zealand.)

The treatments, classes and one on one sessions are world class, with many retreats and high-end hotels retaining in-house specialists or sharing residencies where leaders in their field visit for set periods of the year. And the programmes are tailored to your goals, preferences and needs – Like Bodywork specialists (goodbye back pain – hello Structural Revival at Kamalaya) through to strengthening immunity after cancer (see Cell Vitality – Chiva Som).

Here are a few of the most popular options for Australia travellers right now:

  • De-Stress Retreats

  • Sleep Enhancement Retreats

  • Mindfulness Retreats

  • Getting back on track at a Fitness Retreat

  • Learning something new, like surfing in Morocco

  • Detox Retreats with a focus on healthy eating, movement & yes sometimes colonics or if you prefer lymphatic massage.

  • A complete life overhaul, guests with 28+ days changing their mindset and lifestyle

Personally I love a ‘Discover Recover’ where you spend a portion of your trip exploring the destination and then take a few days to nurture your health and well-being, or you can join a dedicated small group tour or custom self-led itinerary.

After all isn’t that why you took the time away from your busy life, to reset and come back feeling refreshed? If so, then wellness holidays are what you are looking for, and don’t worry many of them still have wine (it’s just likely to be organic).

I’d love to hear if you have been on a wellness holiday or if you are considering one in the future?
